About MagVolt

Familiar objects, reconsidered in metal.

Design and engineering, in house

MagVolt makes everyday objects again in metal, and makes them properly. One release at a time.

A cutting tool working a block of metal, fine swarf curling away from the edge.

01 / Why metal

Metal is a harder choice

Plastic is cheap to make. Metal is not. Every feature is a decision about where material stays and where it goes, and you feel that decision in the weight, the temperature and the edges.

02 / Principles

  1. MechanismA detent you feel through a fingertip.
  2. WeightMass is part of the interface.
  3. PrecisionThe drawing and the finished feel are one subject.
  4. RestraintFew objects. Each one certain.

03 / How we make things

The process follows the object

We pick the process that suits the object rather than forcing every object through one machine. Machining, casting and printing are all in scope, and so is more than one metal. What does not change is the standard the finished thing has to meet.

Position

An object should tell you how it works before you read anything about it.

A wide band of brushed metal, fine directional grain running across the frame.

04 / Surface

Surface is not decoration. It changes how a part reads under light and how it feels under a thumb, so it is chosen for the object and then judged by hand.

A metal corner where a matte grey surface meets a bright chamfer of raw metal.
Surface finish
Two metal parts meeting along a single hairline seam, fine concentric tool marks across both faces.
A clean seam
The MagVolt mark engraved into a brushed metal face, the cut catching light along one edge.

05 / Releases

One release at a time

Every object carries a release number. We would rather be certain about a few things than fill a catalogue, so nothing is announced until it is real.

Five metal objects laid out in a row on a pale surface.
